The Lantern's Ember
By Colleen Houst
Published by Random House Children's/Delacourte Press

This is a unique and imaginative retelling of the Jack O' Lantern story with what felt like a steampunk Otherworld vibe. Jack accepted the lesser of two evils when his town was cursed by a witch. Ironically enough Jack takes it upon himself to look after a witch many, many years later. It is Jack's job to guard the crossroads and to keep the two worlds, ours which is full of colonial humans and the Otherworld, which is full of steampunk urban sprawl and any imaginable creature from ghosts to trolls and everything in between. Jack is instructed to keep an eye out for any witches, you see they are very valuable for their witchlight, the spark inside of them that can power the Otherworld's most other worldly electrical devises and such. Jack takes it upon himself to look over Ember a young witch who is being raised by her elderly aunt who understands magic but doesn't perform any, leaving Ember to make it up as she goes along. Such an inquisitive girl who grows into a very gifted young woman who wants to see her "guardian" and learn about the Otherworld. Thus starts her adventure with a vampire, pirates, people who are more machine than human, and her childhood friend Finney. This was a delightful story that will appeal to young adults as well as adults with rich, descriptive words leading the imagination on an out of this world adventure. All of the main characters have something to offer in the way of quality of character even if they start out being the "shadier" sort of character.

Fire & Heist
by Sarah Beth Durst
published by Crown Books for Young Readers

Skye isn't your ordinary 16 year old rich girl, she's a mythical Wyvern who is also a 16 year old rich girl. Of course the rich part is due to being from a family/species of expert thieves. Unfortunately, her Mom attempted a job that cost them their social standing,a great deal of money and quite possibly her life. Skye reels not only from the loss of her Mom; who never came home; but also her best friend/boyfriend who literally turned his back on her at the behest of his family because of the botched heist. What was Skye's Mom after and what happened to her? Skye cannot let this go and decides that she will plan a heist of her own at the urging of her former boyfriend who still loves her. Skye gathers her crew and undertakes a heist that may just put her very life on the line as they navigate booby traps and the great unknown.  This is a great story line full of girl power without being over the top. It's also about the baby girl coming into her own as she sets out to prove that she may be a girl but she isn't a little girl anymore and she refuses to sit around and look pretty when there is even the slimmest hope that her Mom is alive.

To Best the Boys
by Mary Webber
Published by Thomas Nelson

This was a quick read because I could not put it down. Our main character is courageous and strong willed, fragile and fierce. Rhen doesn't care that she is a Lower or that her cousin Seleni is an Upper. She only cares about finding a cure for the horrid disease that is killing her Mom and others as well. Rhen is not like other girls, she has dreams of mixing chemicals and evaluating microscope slides while your average female looks for a smart match and a good marriage partner to help and support. While Rhen is being pursued by Vincent, once friend now a politician in the making she decides that she will do some pursing of her own. The Holm's Scholarship somewhat deadly labyrinth competition. This test of will and wits is open to all boys wishing to attend the University, after all that is what the Upper boys do and the Lower boys aspire. Rhen has plans of her own, to win the contest and attend the University giving her access to state of the art equipment needed to advance her and her father's research and find a cure for the deadly disease that is ravaging her Mother's body. There is much that Rhen could lose in addition to a few inches of her hair but so much more that she could gain. With the help of her cousin who joins her in the maze if for no other reason than to keep her eye on Rhen and Seleni's easily appalled beau Beryll.. Rhen doesn't need a husband to propel through the ranks of parliament but rather a partner to navigate life. An excellent book and if at all possible I would love to see a sequel written as well.

A Pack of Blood and Lies
by Olivia Wildenstein
published by Twig Publishing

Ness is a girl who has been hardened by difficult life experiences which cause a few trust issues.  She is fiercely loyal with conviction and is a bit of an emotional hot head, sounds about right for a werewolf. She is forced to return to the all male Pack that kicked her out as a young girl. A girl who is now 6 years older and looking for retribution for having been denied an opportunity at revenge. In a dangerous competition for Alpha, she will see if her traitorous heart will be her undoing or her salvation. Ness isn’t the only one in this story who has some baggage. Each character was brought to life on those pages, full of rich details and strong emotions. I cheered, I cried, I cringed, and I smiled. It was amazing to read on as the story twisted and turned. Definitely more of an older Young Adult novel due to language and subject matter. I cannot wait for the next installment as I am sure it will be another great roller coaster of a read!

The Clothing Gig is fashionable.

Tracy's Closet

Creating a boutique out of your (or your friend's) closet can be monetarily beneficial to your wallet and bring you a job. Do you have some nice labels on your clothes? Consider Poshmark as a place to unload them and make a few bucks. Consider it an upper level yard sale. So some things to keep in  mind.

  1. A body form or mannequin is going to help give your clothes a more professional look. Think about it. Ross stores vs. Macy's what is one big difference? Mannequins show off the way an outfit will fit on the average body type. While a pic on a hanger does show the 1 dimensional look, a dress form just looks better.
  2. Make sure to take multiple pictures. Front, back, bottom, top, and sides for shoes and purses. With clothes you want the front, back, label, and possibly a side view or a picture that shows off an unusual or detailed feature of the item.
  3. Skirts and pants are best when described with length from waist to hemline and often times your tops will do better when you measure arm hole to arm hole or the whole bust measurement.
Discounts for multiple items in a bundle saves you time from needing to make a personal offer so that a potential customer is not waiting on you to offer a deal. I usually offer 20% off of two or more. When trying to get the "closet" cleaned out to make room for more merchandise I will offer a 30% deal on two or more items.

So now that you have the closet set up and you've linked to Twitter, Instagram, and Pintrest it is time to look for customers. Most important thing to remember... sharing really is caring!

PS I also purchase on Poshmark, found some great Brooks Glycerin running shoes with next to no wear on the soles for very small fraction of the original price! If you've priced proper running shoes then you know they are not for the faint of heart.

How Quiet is Your Bathroom Fan?

Product Image 5
Look familiar?
This is the Broan 4-Sone 50 CFM vent fan.

Sounds like a funny question right?! Little did I know that one has a choice in volume and airflow. We recently started minor upgrades to the old homestead, after all, now that the baby birds are testing their wings, Gabe and I decided we should enjoy some of those upgrades before downsizing the nest. We started with the flooring on the downstairs. If you haven't seen it you need to because we have BEAUTIFUL engineered floor and our marriage is still intact. Which means we got such a great deal on the price that we had the professionals install it instead of trying to do it ourselves. But I digress.... We had not even considered the coat closet or the half bath as part of the floor makeover but quite frankly it makes perfect sense and it was still under budget (yes we had a budget figured out for this, a 3 year budget). With the bathroom "equipment" moved into another room I thought, hmmm might as well repaint it while I have this opportunity. You see we had already replaced the pedestal sink with a new cabinet and sink and I just happened to see that very bathroom set up on a paint sample card and wanted to reproduce the same look. So, we went from a dark slate to royal raisin. The color is still darker than the bathroom needs but it was what I wanted and I like it. The reason for the general darkness of the bathroom is due to the L shape of the room. The commode is set back in an alcove without a light over it, just a REALLY loud fan. So off we go to Lowe's Home Improvement store to see what we can find to improve the lighting situation. First off we learned that our house was furnished with the cheapest possible vent fans, which provide the least amount of airflow(50-CFM) and the highest level of noise(4-Sone). I never realized there were levels of airflow or noise volume or quality of vent fan until yesterday. I must say that we are rather disappointed that DR Horton went cheap on these, outlet covers I completely understand; we have changed at least half of ours already for more decorative ones over the years. We had options to upgrade just about everything else in our home since we purchased prior to construction, this would have been an easy one to sell us on had they merely mentioned it.  On the plus side we now know that perhaps it wasn't just long hot showers that the boys like to take that caused the crazy moisture in their bathroom but rather it is an ineffectual vent fan. So now like all home improvement projects, one has lead to more than one. All three bathrooms will be getting new vent fans, including ours just because the thing is crazy loud and we now know that it doesn't have to be. Below is our chosen replacement for the upstairs bathroom off the hall. No more post-shower,  hot Carolina humidity inside the house! FYI Lowe's has a great display that shows you the measurements needed in your ceiling so you know ahead of time if you will need to enlarge the opening for the fan or if the replacement matches exactly. We chose one that was the same so we can easily replace it ourselves after we watch a few YouTube videos.
