DECEMBER 28th RELEASES

Bake, Borrow, and Steal
Ellie Alexander
St. Martin"s Paperbacks

A lost manuscript by THE Bard on loan leads to a theft and a murder amidst a Shakespearean culinary event complete with a chocolate sculpted desk created by the intrepid  and her amazing staff at Torte, family, and of course there is no friend who can compare with Lance. A well crafted cozy with hints of corruption, larceny, saffron bread, a chocolate masterpiece, and murder. Torte is the perfect example of what a café should be and Julia is the epitome of a cozy main character, completely relatable and accompanied by a family, a work family and a slightly mischievous friend. Toss in a few suspects  with either means or opportunity and a dash of motive making this a book that you can’t put down because it is just too good.  My only point of contention is that such wonderful desserts and dishes are beautifully described, but it would be simply prefect with a few recipes tossed in.

Witch Trial
Cate Conte
Published by Kensington

While I am not a fan of power inhibiting by means of chocolate, I am a fan of this storyline! Witch Hunt introduced us to Violet and she in turn was introduced to the world of magic. A witch with ability to read an aura like a book, although I think she is pretty good at getting a read on a person without her powers. Such a necessary skill when dealing with rival council members, an unusually attractive mentor, a relationship beyond its "best by date", death by genie, getting burned, dealing with Fiona/Mom, cooking with Zoe, and encroaching shadows. Violet isn't the type to shrink when there is someone who needs her help. The story flowed nicely intertwining the mystery from Witch Hunt and progressing that story while also solving the new mystery. After reading it I am now looking up recipes for risotto, I'll need something to do while waiting for the next book...

DECEMBER 14th RELEASES

Beauty and the Deceased (A Resale Boutique Mystery)
Debra Sennefelder
Published by Lyrical Press

This one made my heart hurt for Kelly, our resale fashionista, with a flair for both style and solving mysteries. Looking forward to spending some girl time catching up with a cousin who is about to make it into the big-time world of makeup, the last thing Kelly expects to do is spend time hunting for her cousin's murderer. Kelly refuses to spend her free time dressing a mannequin when there is a murderer on the loose, regardless of what Detective would prefer.  Great storyline with multiple suspects, a little bit of reality, plenty of red herrings, a scrumptious meal at a local restaurant with baked ravioli and our favorite gentleman (no, not the detective who has his eye on Kelly), a little family drama (okay, there is a lot of family drama thanks to a cranky uncle) and a nice influx of merchandise for the store when a new consigner decides to give up the boxed clothes subscription habit.

DECEMBER 9th RELEASES

A Cornish Christmas Murder (A Nosey Parker Cozy Mystery)
Fiona Leitch
Published by One More Chapter

This was by far the most bizarre mystery yet for Jodie, Met copper turned chef. A remorseful exec, a sot for a Santa, a secret passage, and cursed sword take center stage in this holiday cozy featuring delectable mince meat pies (no meat included). While Santa may be hitting the sauce, Jodie is just plain saucy and a tad snarky, truth is she can be downright scary with her powers of deduction. As many people tend to point out, she is a chip off the ole block, meaning that her Dad, former Chief Inspector for the Penstowan police station, was a man of high regard. Was Santa on someone's naughty list or was it a case of mistaken identity (not bloody likely, I mean have you seen the guy). Some nice distracting moments and I applaud Debbie and Daisy for their abilities to help Jodie, not that she wants Daisy to following that path, but what mum wouldn't be proud. Great fun and a little romance to boot when DI Nathan shows up to help save the day, or at least save Jodie's sanity. Looking forward to making the minced pies, going to use the premade mincemeat fruit but will make my own pie crust using Jodie's recipe.

DECEMBER 7th RELEASES

Cold Brew Corpse (A Coffee Lovers Mystery)
Tara Lush
Published by Crooked Lane Books

Much like a proper cold brewed coffee, this mystery is smooth, and just like yoga, this cozy does some twists and turns that kept me guessing as to how it was going to turn out.  I second guessed myself into not figuring it out until the big reveal. Yoga instructor Raina was worshipped, envied, despised, and maybe just a little bit driven and prone to some drama, in one person’s words, she is complicated. Is she missing or taking some time off, soon conflicting stories lead to multiple suspects giving Lana an opportunity to put on her investigative reporter hat since she freelances for the local paper. One would think that managing Perkatory, concocting some killer cold brew, creating 5-ingredient yet tasty treats, and engaging in some Sheriff dating would keep a girl busy but the call of the investigative reporter must be answered. Chasing down leads can make a person thirsty so it is a good thing that Lana has her cold brew coffee ready, but wait there is something wrong with the concoction leading to yet another mystery to be solved. Speaking of cold brew, I am not usually a fan of cold coffee unless you add some ice and espresso syrup to give it that mocha frappe flavor. I had one K-cup of Cello chocolate cherry K-cups I figured, why not try it as a cold brew. Turns out, I sometimes like a cold coffee after all.

NOVEMBER 30th RELEASES

A Corpse for Christmas (A Cass Peake Cozy)
Lena Reith
Published by Wild Rose Press

A fun and ghostly cozy taking place in the SoCal region where the last thing you would ask for is a corpse, maybe a little snow, definitely not a corpse. Highly entertaining and not just because Doris the ghost if full of moxie and sass. This was my first time reading a Cass Peake Cozy, but it will not be my last. I am intrigued by the fact that people can see Doris, that she can inhabit small animals (namely Cass's cat), and by Cass' unusual and modern business. The story jumps right into the deep end with holiday havoc and the on campus reunion for the ultra-secretive group of thirteen. Plenty of suspects, at least 10 of them to begin with including campus security, my how we start looking at people differently when there is a murder to solve. I did feel that one little detail was not addressed with relation to two of the corpses but otherwise the story developed nicely and now I have a new recipe to try to make, if I can find myself a duck.

A Murder Like No Author
Amy Lillard
Poisoned Pen Press

I want to start by saying that bookstore owner Arlo, should in no way be held accountable for what Hattie, her former guardian, and the Book Club gals get up to when murder is afoot.  Everyone in the town of Sugarloaf is excited, what with the book that has become a movie premiere complete with Hollywood hoopla. A foreign visitor, possible scandal, ghostly goings-on, a mysterious lady in red, and celebrity look-alikes all converge on the cozy town. I’m not sure how involved Arlo would become in this particular instance if it wasn’t for Hattie’s involvement in the renovations of the theater where the murder takes place. I do know that the Book Club gals keep Arlo hopping and a little stressed. Or maybe it is Mads who keeps Arlo stressed because he seems to think that in addition to running a bookstore and a book club, Arlo can run interference with the Book Club gals who look for adventure at every turn. After all they often ask where her sense of adventure is, such as when trying cauliflower crust quiche. I agree with Arlo that cake would be better, but sometimes you just need to throw caution to the wind and try a cauliflower crust quiche with ham and cheese.

Killer Words (A Mystery Bookshop Mystery)
V.M. Burns
Published by Kensington

Say what you will about Detective Brad “Stinky” Pitt but don’t call him a murderer, at least not in front of Nana Jo. Detective Pitt may have no respect for the abilities of Samantha (Sam) Washington and the Shady Acres sleuths. Should we be worried that Nana Jo thinks that to relieve Sam’s boredom we “just need another murder…” Such a feisty and funny grandma. Nany Jo is but one in a great cast of characters, the type you would want to hang out with in addition to level-headed Sam. Another enjoyable aspect to Ms. Burns’ books is that there is a historical mystery inside the Cozy mystery, making it a two-fer! I found this to be an enjoyable read with a casino, canoodling, possible cop-related corruption, and maybe some commitments. There were several red herrings as every good cozy needs, as well as mention  of apple pie tartlets.

Murder at the Bake Sale
Lee Hollis
Kensington

After reading this one I was craving chocolate chip cookies and feeling better about my abilities to make a decent batch. This is one of the few cozies where you have a partnership that would seem to make no sense but for the wonderful coziness of the characters. Maya and Sandra were friends once upon a time and now they are private investigative partners, well ex-cop Maya is the PI and senator’s wife Sandra is in training. Their lives seem to mirror each other at times while also appearing to be completely opposite and you just aren’t sure which way they are going to go, but you get the feeling that these are a couple of decisive ladies. More than one mystery, but are the intertwined? Hard to tell because of the red herrings and excellent twists and turns in the plot. A great read and I look forward to the next one!

Murder at the Lobstah Shack
Maddie Day
Published by Kensington

A culinary cozy with an excellent storyline that captures your imagination and recipes that tempt your taste buds. Just imagine the nerve of someone to dump a body in the Lobstah Shack and cause all of that great seafood to have to be tossed, such a travesty! Any easy plot to get caught up in with some backstory to give character depth and new plot twists to keep the story moving forward. I also enjoyed not only the mystery and sleuthing skills of Mac, bike shop owner extraordinaire, but also the way the story takes notice of homelessness and possible ways that people can help with both time and/or money. There are also some very tasty recipes to try out such as the cranberry scones and the soba seafood salad, which are both on my to-do list for this weekend.

A Murder Yule Regret (A  Bread Shop Mystery)
Winnie Archer
Kensington

Ivy is going to have a Dickens of a time solving this mystery. Starlets, a sleazy reporter, ghosts of secrets past, and some incredible sounding baked goods. Like all cozy sleuths, Ivy is in the wrong place at the right time or the right place at the wrong time, either way she has an eye for detail as well as for photography. Did she see something through the lens of her camera or did someone see her snapping pictures. Is this a case of Hollywood hoopla turned homicide or an attempt to hide the ugly truths from a paparazzi past.? I particularly like how good Mrs. Branford is at reading Ivy's mind, not to mention the way the Blackbird Ladies use their book club skills to help Ivy , who in turn helps her bff/sister in law Emmaline. The story was a page turner, and not just because I wanted to get to the end and see what recipes Winnie Archer had decided to share. Yule truly enjoy not only the well crafted mystery but also the Buche de Noel and the Star Bread!

NOVEMBER 29th RELEASES

Death Among the Stars
Sharon Linnea
Arundel Publishing

Not your fluffy cozy, much like the cocktails that Avalon serves, this series has a bit of  an adult taste but not too much to be out of the genre.  Even the cocktail recipes found at the end of each chapter vary between the hard stuff and the nonalcoholic variety. Great story, a little bit more of Avalon’s Hollywood past converges with her present giving us a behind the scenes look at her mysterious background. There is a nice amount of suspense, suspects, stalkers and screen time, plus the usual Avalon insight from being, the bartender extraordinaire/collector of stories. I had just as hard a time figuring out the who-done- it as I did with my drink selection.

NOVEMBER 9th RELEASES

An Eggnog  to Die For (A Cape Cod Foodie Mystery)
Amy Pershing
Published by Berkley

I wuv this series! You will too and not just because of the engaging story or enticing recipes. It is the way you become caught up in the story because it reads like Sam is speaking to you in such an amazing and relatable way. Plenty of backstory is shared so no need to go looking on YouTube for Sam’s most notable moments. An odious victim and a variety of unsuspecting suspects kept me guessing. When I wasn’t drooling over the food, I was laughing out loud more times than I can count! After reading this one, I may just have to break down and make myself some eggnog to go with the amazing recipes and help tide me over until the next installment.

Death on the Shelf (A Haunted Library Mystery)
Allison Brook
Published by Crooked Lane Books

Family, they can bring joy or stress, or possibly murder. Carrie is busy being the Maid of Honor who is organized and ready and constantly reassuring her BFF Angela, that everything will be okay. Keeping Angela calm becomes increasingly difficult with a murder at the wedding reception and a selection of suspects, many of which are relatives. This is such a busy and intriguing storyline that you can’t put the book down. Not nearly are busy as Carrie, who in addition to helping Miss Evelyn’s latest quest, considering being a part of the city council, and learning to be comfortable with the fact that her Dad works with her boyfriend.  In addition to the excellent plot, there are some nice meals mentioned such as eggplant rollatini and double chocolate brownies.

October 2021 New Cozy Reviews

Thank you to the authors, publishers, and NetGalley for providing these ARCs in exchange for honest reviews.

RELEASE DATE OCTOBER 26th

Death by Hot Apple Cider
Alex Erickson
Published by Kensington

Censorship and cider, two things that do not go good together. Not that anyone in their right mind would think that the cider was bad or that the books which Krissy carries in her café bookstore were inciting unrest. An overly opinionated victim who was being made into a martyr makes for many suspects and things get a bit out of hand. Excellent story with a nice nod to the importance of respect for differences and individuals. Oh and the murderer, well, I had no idea so the red herrings were definitely well placed and executed.

Deck the Donuts
Ginger Bolton
Published by Kensington

Second chances should be cherished and not wasted. A bus accident, a vandalized ice sculpture, cross country skiing, yummy donuts, mistletoe, and murder. The plot is as well groomed as Brent's ski paths with twist and turns. Emily is a character you can relate to as she continues to move forward in life making amazing donuts, and using her instincts to separate more than just whites and yolks as she follows the clues. Plenty of backstory to explain the relationships and best of all, a recipe for a gingerbread donut!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder
A Catering Hall Mystery
Maria DiRico
Published by Kensington

A scam, a dead body, plenty of suspects, and a sprig of mistletoe.  Another adventure with the Family, and that is family with a capital F. Mia is called on by Mr. B to help the Family deal with a secret that is sure to get some halls decked. At the same time, Mia is dealing with teen drama in the way of a sweet 16 party that has to be THE event of the year, with a side of mama drama when her wayward mother makes a most unexpected appearance, and Nonna is treating the annual neighborhood decorating contest like a turf war with the other streets.  Every character is a character, Mia is the sort of character who makes you laugh out loud, and don't get me started about her Belle View Banquet Manor coworker Cammie, who has the ultimate work schedule.  I really like how this series is developing with the addition of new characters and who wouldn't like a few recipes to try out after reading the book such as Shrimp, Crab, and Artichoke Cavatelle or Almond Florentine Lace Cookies.

To the Tome of Murder
Lauren Elliot
Published by Kensington

Some family you are born with and some you choose, Addie didn't choose to have a cousin who can bring both a smile and a frown to her face in quick succession, but she isn't going to leave her stranded at the top of the suspect list. Family trees, a vintage briefcase, stolen rare books, a snooty collector, a murderous hanger, coquettish behavior, and maybe the end of a fear to commit are all part of this latest Beyond the Page Bookstore Mystery. Engaging characters and plenty of backstory sprinkled in to keep you on track, plus a few suspects that keep you guessing as much as Addie does.

RELEASE DATE OCTOBER 19th

Mulled to Death
Kate Lansing
Published by Berkley Publishing Group

First off, this wine cozy includes recipes which I am looking forward to making the mulled wine, snacks, and cupcakes. They will be a perfect pairing while reading during the 12 Days of Cozies. Great plot with plenty of misdirection and suspects. I especially liked the side story of the sneak thief. Parker is a great character, a passionate vintner who relates almost everything through wine and the process of making wine, which was both entertaining and educational.  Some very nice interactions between Parker and Reid as well as Parker and Liam. No need to have read the other books to understand who the players are, but you will find that you enjoy this one enough to go back to the series starter. A nice bit of girl power without being overdone between BauerPower and Aunt Laura’s Galentine celebrations.

RELEASE DATE OCTOBER 12th

Once Upon a Seaside Murder
Maggie Blackburn
Published by Crooked Lane Books

Picking up where the first one left off but you don’t need to read the first to enjoy this latest Beach Reads Mystery. Professor Summer Merriweather has a lot to learn, from running a bookshop, understanding the importance of the cozy genre, and her mysterious family history. Little did she know that a cozy mystery writer panel would bring up a mysterious murder tied directly to her new family. Summer has so many questions and only two people seem to have the answers, her new grandmother and    her deceased Mother, who kept more than one secret. Excellent story development with plenty of backstory sprinkled in to keep you in the loop. Looking forward to the next one as well as making the vegan pumpkin bread and vegan chocolate chip cookie recipes found at the back of the book!

  RELEASE DATE OCTOBER 5th

A Cure for What Ales You
Ellie Alexander
Published by St. Martin's Press Minotaur Books

Sloane Kraus is one step closer to solving the mystery of her past while solving the mystery of the murdered maid, and all while making some rather tasty beer related treats. In this story, which is a stand-alone, with plenty of back story to keep you from being lost, Sloan learns that as one door closes, another one opens. I love how this Bavarian getaway is the picture perfect cozy town complete with caring neighbors and slightly kooky yet endearing characters. The story kept pace and the suspects were many. A perfect pairing, much like Sloane’s beer inspired baking/cooking, and yes, I did in fact find a beer-nana bread recipe and proceeded to make it using a Hofbrau Dunkel beer in honor of Octoberfest.

Chapter and Curse (Cambridge Bookshop Series #1)
Elizabeth Penny
Published by St. Martin's Paperbacks

Series starter that starts off as a bibliophiles dream!  Molly Kimball and her Mom need a new start, not unlike many cozy characters, so when an opportunity to travel to Cambridge, England to help save the family bookstore arrives in the form of a letter, they hop across the pond and into a mystery. Molly's mum has been very "mum" when it comes to her side of the family, in fact Molly was unaware that she had family in England. Speaking of Molly, who loves both coffee and a proper blueberry cream cheese scone, is a very relatable character who is going to make an excellent sleuth, when she isn't going through Uncle Tom's book inventory or uploading social media pics on behalf of the family book store. There was a nice group of suspects, a little danger, and a dashing bike shop owner. This is sure to be a great series and I look forward to reading the next one and finding a recipe for blueberry cream cheese scones!

Debra Sennefelder
Published by Kensington Books
Release date: September 28, 2021

This brings the phrase nosey neighbor to a whole new level. Our victim, Birdie Donovan, manages to irritate almost everyone in town, so when she ends up dead, not many people are surprised or disappointed. This character’s annoying ways make you think “oh no she did not” while at the same time wondering how Hope can be so nice and feel so bad about their confrontation. No good deed goes unpunished so Hope must work fast to make sure she is the one asking the questions and not down at the police station explaining why her muffins were found at the scene of the crime. Since we know that Hope didn’t do the deed, after all, she would never use her baking powers for evil, which leaves multiple suspects with multiple reasons. Plenty of plot and back story to keep you in the know PLUS my favorite part of any culinary cozy, RECIPES! I for one enjoyed the mac n cheese and chocolate chip scones. I was even inspired to find an apple streusel muffin.

Here Comes the Fudge
Nancy Coco
Published by
Release date: September 28, 2021

A fast paced novella with quick and easy fudge recipes mixed in to sweeten the story. A groom who isn't talking, a cop who has poor timing, a fellow B&B owner with sparkling eyes, and a fudge-maker/B&B owner who will not let her best friend (aka the bride) down. As if not sharing intel on a murder is going to stop Allie McMurphy from getting involved. Undaunted and undeterred she sets out to make sure the bride and groom get there happy ever after. The story takes place over a week and a half and I was tired for her just after the second day. Up before the gulls caw making fudge for the store and online sales then changing gears to run the family hotel and then there are the maid of honor duties. How did she have the energy to be a sleuth? Oh, and a little romance was thrown in as well. The story kept pace and had plenty of mystery all the way up to the end. Now to make some fudge and brownies from the yummy recipes found between the chapters.

Mrs. Claus and the Halloween Homicide
Liz Ireland
Published by Kensington Books
Release date: September 28, 2021

April Claus is not your run of the mill Mrs. Claus, nope, she is anything but the typical storybook rendition. Imagine if Nancy Drew had a aunt who was a whole lot of open minded (she married Nick Claus after all) and a bit sleuthy (because the local constables need all the help they can get). All she wanted was to bring a little Halloween holiday to Christmastown and what she gets is a pumpkin massacre. Just as entertaining as the Santaland Slayings and can be read as a stand alone, but what would the fun in that be? April is a highly entertaining character, who is doing her best to navigate the social dictums of being a MRS. Clause, not to be confused with the Dowager Mrs. Claus or her sister in law who is also the widowed Mrs. Clause. In a land of elfish delights, such as fudge, peppermint sticks, and stylish footwear, April is ready to eat all the treats (I'm thinking either peppermint or pumpkin spice scones) while she does her best to avoid the tricks.

R
eading Between the Crimes (A Jane Doe Book Club Mystery)
Kate Young
Published by Crooked Lane Books
September 7, 2021

Riveted is the only way to describe my last two days of reading. I could not put this down, even while I brushed my teeth, I needed to know what was going to happen next. Lyla Moody is no stranger to mystery, she works for her private detective Uncle, is part of murder mystery book group called The Jane Does, and solved  a case or two. This time instead of the murder winding up on her doorstep, it takes place in her parents’ library. If you aren’t hooked yet, add a dash of Southern hospitality, some steel magnolia qualities, and the unquenchable urge to right the wrong.  Emotions run high and family history will be dug up no matter how improper Lyla’s Mother considers it or how much Uncle Calvin tries to avoid it.  Suspects seemed obvious but that was only part of the story, and what a convoluted and wild story it turned out to be. Find a comfortable place to read and hold on because this is going to be a wild read/ride!

August New Release Cozies

Thank you to the authors, publishers, and NetGalley for providing these ARCs in exchange for honest reviews.

Partners in Lime
Bree Baker
Publish date: August 31, 2021
Publisher

Partners in Lime is a good title for this one, the last one, sniff sniff. I shall say no more as I am not one to over share. I will say this, I will miss Everly and Grady and the folks of Charm. There is something quite Charm-ing about the way Bree Baker aka Julie Anne Lindsay weaves local history into her Outer Banks books. I will miss the Sun, Sand, and Tea shop as this is the final book of the series. An excellent storyline in an excellent series complete with excellent recipes! Plenty of mystery, misdirection, backstory snippets and romance. All of it comes together like the different ingredients from an Everly recipe. I am definitely looking forward to making tea cakes and some bubbling basil raspberry tea.

Double Chocolate Cookie Murder

Sherry Oliveri is back and this time she is a contest judge instead of a participant. This is an unusual tale that takes a fiery tale of the past and a bitter bit of the present, not exactly the best ingredients for a cookie recipe but it does make for an interesting cookie recipe origin story. Sherry finds that being an impartial judge isn’t as easy as you would think, especially when her proverbial Doc Watson is also a cookie contestant. Plenty of engaging characters, clues and culinary coziness, especially the recipes found in the back of the book. I for one am looking forward to making peppermint patties for the holidays!

Mrs. Morris and the Vampire
Traci Wilton
Publish date: August 24, 2021
Publisher: Kensington Books

B&B owner Charlene Morris is in the amazing town of Salem and on the trail of some Halloween tricks and treats. Armed with her wits and pepper spray she will once again be the hostess with most-est in the way of social hour snacks (truly cook inspiring) and Samhain sleuthing. Not the first in the series but definitely not hard to follow as plenty of backstory is added to keep the reader engaged and engrossed. Set in the town of Salem, I wonder if Charlene or Jack watches local reporter, Lee Barrett (from the Witch City cozies). This series has inspired me to add Salem, Mass. as a bucket list destination and to add social hour to my Friday schedule.

No Grater Crime
Maddie Day
Publish date: August 24, 2021
Publisher: Kensington Books

There is no room for a poisonous shroom at the Pancakes and Pans Country Store, and Robbie isn’t going to sit on her morels while waiting for the Health Department to give her the all clear. There is a complete family of suspects including Abe’s ex-wife who may or may not be so happy about Robbie and Abe’s upcoming nuptials. Plenty of clues and tantalizing meal descriptions, with plenty of back story to keep the mystery moving forward. I am definitely going to make the scones and fritters for a Sunday brunch.

Railroaded 4 Murder
J.C. Eaton
Publish date: August 24, 2021
Publisher: Kensington Books

Includes a very helpful cast of characters but be warned, these characters will have you literally laughing out loud, so be aware of where you are when you read. If you choo chose this book you will be in for quite a ride! No need to have read the others to know what is going one, each story is a stand-alone, but it does move an overall theme along, mainly Phee’s life, love, mother-daughter relationship, and the unstoppable Streetman. These books are such a hoot to read and you don’t have to be a daughter to have those same thoughts that Phee has about your own mother and her extremely colorful friends. I hope this storyline keeps adding tracks because even if Phee isn’t ready to officially joint the detective ranks with Nate and Marshall, she is an awesome amateur sleuth!  With all the talk about bagels and bialys, I think I might just have to try my hand at making some, as inspired by the many references to Bagels N More.

The Secret Staircase
Sheila Connolly
Publish date: August 24, 2021
Published by Minotaur Books

What could more mysterious than a body in a wall? What starts out as a challenging historic renovation becomes a case of double homicide. The story did a good job shoring up some history from the past and the present to keep the reader from being lost. Secrets abound and not just in the wall, plenty of clues and suspects to choose from. I was a little confused; however, when it came to the relationship between Kate and Josh and what exactly she wanted it to be, project related or romance related.

Murder Most Fowl
Donna Andrews
Publish date:
Publisher:

Meg mysteries are the best! Frightening fungus, renegade reenactors, dueling departments, oh and a murder. Meg is the ultimate steel magnolia, since she lives in Virginia and is a smithy. Plus the family is a hoot, and what a large and diverse family it is and they always add to the cozy factor in each story. This one is no different with an unusual group of suspects and plenty of motive to go around. To quote the very play that Michael, Meg’s husband is directing, “something wicked this way comes.” Wickedly entertaining!

Chocolate Raccoon Rigamarole
JoAnna Carl
Publish date:
Publisher:

What a fun word, rigmarole, it is not used nearly enough in today’s conversations. It has been a while since I read a TenHuis chocolate mystery, it is good to be back in Warner Pier, Michigan. I had forgotten about the fun idioms that Lee uses and I don’t mean her malapropism, I mean the phrases such as “not getting a nickel’s worth of sleep” the stuff that her Texas grandmother would say. Chock full of fun characters some of which are a little nutty, plus who doesn’t like reading about chocolate! The plot hits the ground running, and what an unusual start to a story, a mass of break-ins caused by snack stealing thieves and urban raccoons on the loose. Surely the raccoons aren’t casing the joint? Plenty of clues and red herrings, I didn’t figure out the “who” but was pretty sure about the why. Looking forward to making some potato soup and finding a recipe for Kahlua bon bons!

Seven Year Witch

I have to ask is the witch referring to Josie or Fiona, the soon to be ex-wife? Book #2 of the Witch Way Library series is every bit as entertaining and enthralling as the series starter. I have often thought that books speak to me, but not to the extent that they speak to Josie. With her ever growing powers and a town that is struggling to make a come-back, Josie is in it for the long haul. Quirky characters, a seemingly unattainable love interest, and a little bit of magic make this cozy mystery a must read. With a few suspects, a few red herrings, and a few clues, will keep you reading for more than a few hours.  Be sure to make a bowl of oatmeal with some extra toppings, like pecans and honey, to enjoy while you read.

Scone of Contention

Key West newlywed Haley Snow journeys to Scotland for a most unusual honeymoon, one that is filled with family and fatality. Now here is a critic after my own heart, a food critic who is more foodie than critic. This upbeat character is surrounded by equally upbeat friends, like Miss Gloria, an extremely feisty lady of mature years. Plenty of interesting suspects and each with a motive for murder. A great blending of the regular characters and the new ones, plus the No need to read previous books to be able to follow along, but just think of all the recipes you would be missing. I plan on trying the Cock a Leek soup recipe with a side of cheese scones for a comfy cozy meal.

Cider Shop Rules

Fall is in the air as well as the smell of some enticing cider which is much better than the smell of cigarette smoke from an escaped convict who is stalking Winnie to get to Colton. So if you aren’t intrigued yet just wait. There are rumors, relatives, and reenactors, all it needs are some recipes (hint-hint). Winnie is the epitome of a cozy character and her Grandma’s crew of knitters are the best, they are also the best even if the rival knitting group two towns over would disagree. As always, there is plenty of backstory so you are not lost, or confused, and if you forget who a character is, just call them Kenny Rogers like bff Dot! Not such a cliffhanger ending on this one as there was with the previous story, but I can’t wait to read the next one as the story continues to develop, much like Winnie’s cider recipes like her anniversary flavor.

Still Life and Death

We bid a fond farewell to the Shepherd sisters, but not before they solve one last crime and provide us with a tasty brownie recipe! This book, like the other two, can be read as stand‑alone but isn’t it so much more fun to have the backstory and character development. The three sisters make not only an amazing sleuthing team but are also the textbook cozy supportive family that one comes to expect from this genre. The story developed nicely with plenty of clues and plenty of distractions with an ending that had me in happy tears. Which disappeared as I devoured the wonderfully chocolaty brownies made using the recipe at the end of the book.

Cajun Kiss of Death

Starts with a New Year’s Eve triple wedding, Cajun style! Moves onto a David versus Goliath with a side serving of eatery espionage. This turned out to be a three mysteries in one, which makes it an excellent way to end an excellent series (sniff, sniff). I will miss the Crozat B&B and those culinary classics, love it when an author not only talks about food but also shares recipes! This time around I am giving the beer bread recipe a try but I may also look up the recipe for the French toast even though it isn’t in the recipes listed, because who doesn’t like French toast? The Epilogue was a nice touch to tie off the story.

July New Cozy Reviews

Body Over Troubled Waters
By Denise Swanson
Published by Poisoned Pen Press
Publish date July 27, 2021

Scumble River has a modern day Mayberry feel in that it is a small town with a slightly zany family, the Dooziers which adds to the fun aspect of the story even though they are not the main characters. I am also a huge fan of Uncle Charlie’s turn of phrase, like how he isn’t knocking on Death’s door, nope, he is playing doorbell ditch! Highly engaging and Skye and Wally are a well-rounded, crime solving, cozy couple. It did catch me off guard every time his Hummer was mentioned, not the standard police car, but hey, why can’t the Chief be the son of a multimillion dollar Dad? A nice blend of suspects, plenty of supportive characters that moved the story along, and a great ending. Definitely one that I will be adding to my watch list for series.  For my recipe testing I’ll be looking for a cinnamon streusel scone or sweet potato and ham casserole, or maybe both!

Murder She Edited

By Kaitlyn Dunnett
Published by Poisoned Pen Press
Publish date July 27, 2021

I do like the mature mystery solver aspect of this series. I also like how feisty Mikki is, so please do not try and compare her to Jessica Fletcher, she is a sleuth like no other. Very good storyline, easy to follow and keeps you turning the pages, even if you are not a slightly over-the-top fan girl. The murder was in the past but the danger is in the present. Nice plot development and some most excellent grammar tips!

Murder at the Lakeside Library

Series starter, with a rustic “Laker” library, you should be sure to “check it out!” I was instantly hooked by the tragic start, pulling on the heartstrings and making Rain an easy character to empathize with. She was looking for quiet reflection and what she got was a loud distraction. Engaging characters and a plot that keeps pace, not-to-mention a really nice pesto chicken recipe for grilling shared at the conclusion of the story.

June New Release Cozies

Thank you to the authors, publishers, and NetGalley for providing these ARCs in exchange for honest reviews.

Best Poppy McAllister book yet! Suffice it to say that if this is the last one we get, I will understand, I won't like it but I would understand. This episode was was like a microcosm of the series, but if it is your first Poppy novel, you need to start at the beginning to fully appreciate what this amazing character has gone through, what she has accomplished, and what she has sacrificed (especially gluten) to find her HEA. You will be able to keep up with the story line and all of the different characters, and I do mean characters LOL. From Aunt Ginny and the biddies to little Henry, the one guy who Poppy can fully give her heart to without worrying about what might happen. Oh and there is the usual mystery and intrigue as well as some highly humorous shenanigan's including glow sticks and the death of Rabbitzilla. Highly enjoyable with a mouthwatering menu follows the story that is perfect for an afternoon tea or to take to lunch during the week. I for one am looking forward to making/trying the chicken salad and hot cross buns.

See Something (A Witch City Mystery #11)
Written by Carol J. Perry
Published by Kensington
Release date: May 25, 2021

Definitely the most suspenseful of the Witch City Mysteries, with a case of amnesia, a glimpse of a death, a reckless criminal, and some very tasty recipes. Lee has been promoted and is no longer running down the stories but that doesn't mean she isn't still racing to solve the crime, after all this isn't her first rodeo. Between shiny surfaces, O'Ryan the clever cat, Aunt Ibby and the Angels, Jane Doe is sure to recover from shock induced amnesia. Lee is content to work on her new job of programming tasks and making ready the new Ranger Rob and Katie the Clown plus a dog and pony show and she still ends up in the middle of the investigation. As good as any eagle eyed sharp shooter, Lee sees things that help to further the investigation but they also lead her further into danger. On the edge of my seat as I "turned" the pages of my Kindle app. Even if this is your first Witch City Mystery you will not have trouble keeping up with the characters and chances are that you will want to check out the other books as well. Oh and did I mention the enticing menu items mentioned throughout the story? At the end of the story you will find so many wonderful recipes. I have already tried two of them

Murder in a Scottish Garden
Written by Traci Hall
Published by Kensington
Release date: May 25, 2021

Poor Paislee, all she wants to do is be a good Mom, run her yarn shop, help her Granddad and visit with the ladies on Knit and Sip night. You can't help but to root Paislee on as she tackles one challenge after another never thinking about herself, which is what gets her into possible legal trouble while on the field trip where the mystery really starts. There are moments when it seems like a glimmer of romance is possible but then she reminds herself and her BFF Lydia that she has her son Brody and he is all the man she needs, even when she turns heads during a night out dressed to the tens (because nines just isn't good enough).  Besides, she is rather busy helping DI Zeffer to solve crimes and this latest one had me guessing, so many suspects and red herrings. Paislee works her way through the suspects with her usual outgoing, helpful, and friendly demeanor, not to mention that she is doggedly determined. She is definitely someone who easily wins people over  You don't need to have read the series starter to be able to keep up, Paislee does a nice job of telling her story and bits of her back story as well. Looking forward to finding a chicken and leek soup or basil scone recipe.

Mean and Shellfish (A Pennsylvania Dutch Inn Mystery)
Written by Tamar Myers
Published by Severn House Publishers
Release date: May 6, 2021

It has been a few years since I "visited" the town of Hernia run by Mayor Magdalena  Yoder, proprietress of the PennDutch Inn bed and breakfast. Mags is just as funny as I remember and not just chuckle funny but laugh out loud funny because she has a personality that is definitely bigger than her farm and the stories are filled with just as many charachters as it is with farm animals. The author does a great job of sprinkling in bits of back story so that the reader is never lost but rather  is as enticed to do the work and read the earlier stories. Doing the work is a popular theme in the PennDutch stories, after all people pay a great deal to get an honest to goodness Amish experience complete with mucking out stalls and schlepping their own luggage. This is one of the craziest PennDutch cozy yet and not just because there is a Billy Goat parade where one can throw candy at those who walk in the parade making goat noises, or because of the extremely unusual suspects, or the red herrings. Add it all together and you have a tired and true Magdalena Yoder Mystery complete with a very yummy recipe.

April New Release Cozies

Lemon Drop Dead (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery)
By Amanda Flowers
Published by Kensington
Release date: April 27, 2021

This story is very appropriately titled, Lemon Drop because the story is definitely bitter sweet but not just because of the death, no there are several different reason and several different stories going on, as usual, in this cozy. The multiple story lines woven throughout the story and the series draws you in and keeps you coming back for more. You are invested in not one character but in many and while the story would be entertaining even without the character development of Charlotte or Emily, it adds just the right flavor, like with the chocolate that Bailey works with. Although our story refers back to the series starter, you do not need to have read it to understand that Emily had a secret from her past that resurfaces in her present and will quite possibly lead to a happier future.  Cousin Charlotte has a secret of her own that comes out, although I think we all had a pretty good idea. Lastly is Baily, who is the best pig sitter ever with a heart of gold, a heart that was hurt and then mended and just maybe is ready for more. A very good storyline, great plot development, and I had no idea that the killer was the killer or why they did it until the very end. If you're wondering about the lemon drop candies, they are as easy as the sounds but you do need some patience waiting for the sugar to reach the hard ball stage and then don't wait too long when they cool before finishing them up.

Southern Sass and Battered Bride
By Kate Young
Published by Kensington
Release date: April 27, 2021

Every cozy protagonist needs a BFF like Betsy. She strikes me as the type who would bail you out if she wasn't already helping you hide the body, of course in this Southern Sass cozy, she is actually trying to help Marygene to find the body and trying not to strangle her cousin Alex, Marygene's former on again off again first love. There is a great depth of character in this story from the pain and anguish that Marygene feels, the lost and hopeless Alex, to the fierce loyalty of Bets and Aunt Vi. There is definitely something strange going on from the missing body to the bomb and back to the reappearing sweat suit clad bride. This one definitely twists and turns as clues surface and red herrings distract, they distract almost as well as as the suave Officer Javier, who shows Marygene something she needed to see, and her Mama told her something she needed to hear. Great story and equally great recipes, as usual!

From Port to Rigor Morte (A Wine Trail Mystery)
By J.C. Eaton
Published by Kensington
Release Date: April 20, 2021

Apparently when you stumble upon enough dead bodies, you become a bit of an expert at cadaver identification, at least in the eyes of an 11 year old.   Instead of a trip to the cost Norrie is  drawn into another murder mystery, this time it is to stop the impending arrival of  Catherine's son Steven. It seems like a lot of work, maybe it would be easier to have Bradley spend the weekend or to just point blank tell  Catherine that she is not available. It would be much much easier than dealing with Eli the kid who keeps finding dead bodies and getting into mischief. Not that Norrie needs any help or incentive to go sleuthing or in getting her friends like Theo and Don or her special friend Bradley to join in. Another wild adventure for Norrie that had me guessing about the way the pieces fit together. I like how she has tried multiple ways to keep her clues straight. Because there are way too many red herrings to not write that stuff down. How do these bodies/deaths link together and is it really about the Port or something else. It will keep you guessing so I suggest you grab something yummy from Wegmans and a glass of port or any other grape related libation and settle in for another Wine Trail Mystery. Of course the biggest mystery of all is when Norrie's sister and brother in law will be back from hunting rare bugs. I hope they stay away for at least 3 more books!

Release date: April 20, 2021

You have just got to love it when a plan comes together, and Ellery Adams and Parker Riggs have crafted a story work of art. Molly Appleby is back and she has not one but three mysteries to solve if you include the meeting with her absent father. By absent I mean like a missing relic, the man was never a part of her life, at least she didn't think so. Even crazier than meeting the father you never knew is finding out that his Stepson is a possible suspect in the death of an antiques dealer whom Molly was supposed to interview for her job as a writer/reporter.  Thought it couldn't get any odder? Well there is a desk with a hidden drawer containing Civil War coins and a modern gun. If I don't have your attention or interest yet, I'm not sure what else I could say. Molly is an easy to relate to character who shares bits of her history with you while researching the history of items which keeps you from being lost between the suspects and the storyline. This story is accented in just the right amount of red herrings and misdirection to keep guessing until the end where you find yourself saying "wait, what did they just say?" Where you will then find yourself rereading a few pages. Great story that was born of a real life home renovation treasure find.

Deadly Editions (Scottish Bookstore Mystery)
By Paige Shelton
Published by Kensington
Release date: April 6, 2021

A treasure hunt for a priceless first edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde has Delaney on a pub crawl of sorts that is being hosted by a most unusual benefactor.  has a very unique history and it seems to be clouding the present mystery. Delaney's bookish voices seemed unusually quiet this time around, but maybe it was because she had a partner in crime solving. Birk and Delaney team up to not only solve the strange case of the treasure hunt but to also work their way through the clues and red herrings surrounding the hunt's missing benefactress, Ms. Shelagh O'Conner. The usual and unusual characters of this series help to further the mystery along, Brigid and Delaney and manage to have a bit of compatible sleuthing when hunting down the history behind Mr. Hyde and the death of Shelagh's secret beau from long ago. I am not sure which part was more interesting, the treasure hunt/pub tours or the Jekyll & Hyde history that surrounded those pubs. It all worked together so well that a reader is drawn in regardless of this being their first Scottish Bookstore Mystery or their most recent.
